Hello friends, it’s Chippin’ Chewsday, innit? If you struggle out of the bunker, stay put. I promise it’s much easier than it looks once you understand the mechanics. The focus of hitting a greenside bunker shot is using the bounce, or the bottom of the club here to hit the sand first, using the sand itself to force the ball out rather than hitting the ball itself. So we’ll use everything in our setup here to help with that. Focus points here being the face wide open, and I mean wide open, face pointing straight up in the air, ball very forward of my stance as well as my weight. Nice wide stance, then I’m going to get comfy. I’m going to sit down nice and low, and make sure that I’m hitting the sand first, test the surface, dig my feet in a few inches until I find the harder sand. The swing is very easy to imagine as well. Arms up to 9 o’clock with the club straight up and then as quickly as you can to that position on the other side, focusing on unhinging, flipping as early as you can, hitting the sand two inches behind the ball or so with the bottom of your wedge. Control your distance with the club in your hand. You’d be surprised how easy it is to hit a 50-yard bunker shot with this exact method and a Pitching Wedge or 9-iron.
