If you struggle with fat or thin shots around the green, you have no idea how to consistently hit those 40 to 60 or 70-yard shots. You want to go for the green more on those short par 4s or your second shot on par 5s because you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, your half swing wedges are just as good as your full swing irons then stay put. We have a great lesson for you today because it’s Chippin’ Chewsday, innit? We touched on timing a little bit last week, and I want to expand on that even further. The reason that nobody likes this shot, I think, is the way that most of us take those half or shorter swings with no real thought about the tempo or how important that might be for all of us and our swings, depending on the timing of certain moves. That timing that you have in your full swing, what we all spend 20 minutes on the driving range before our rounds, figuring out and dialing in our full swing timing, right? Most of us don’t do that for a 30 to 50 yard shots. You just take your swing, try to stop it shorter, and then go down to the golf ball and your back swing takes a fraction of the time that you’re used to, that you’ve dialed in on the range, right? You have no idea how to time the release. You’re either too fast, too slow, hitting the ground six inches behind the ball, maybe even not hitting the ground at all. Why would we do that when we can make it so much easier by trying to match the timing that we have for our full swings? Each backswing, I’m taking a different speed. The shorter that swing is, the slower that I want to take the club back so that all of my backswings, no matter how long or how short, take the same amount of time. That way my timing is the same for every shot. I should only really have two different tempo settings for my swing. I’m either swinging, or if I have an extra short shot, like a little bump and run, I’ll use my putting stroke and my putting tempo. Those are the only two that I’m using, and I want those to be as similar as possible with every shot. That will make those short shots a ton easier to time and strike, make those short shots so much more fun to hit, and hit well with consistency.
