Do you struggle making consistent contact around the green? You take out the putter really anywhere inside of 40 yards because you’re petrified of your wedges, trying to hit those short chips and pitch shots then don’t go anywhere. It’s Chippin’ Chewsday, innit? That means we have a wonderful short game lesson for you today. And today we want to talk about how to improve our contact around the green. If that’s something that you struggle with, I’m going to assume, and I feel very safely so, that your chipping stroke looks something like this here. It’s just a microscopic version of your full swing that stays very low to the ground. You take it more around your body more than you take it up and down. When you do that, you rely very heavily on timing for your chip shots. When you do this, you have to make so many unnatural moves to get your body out of the way, your hands in just the right position. You have days where you can hit any spot in the green that you want with your eyes closed, and then days where you don’t know where your club is gonna make contact with the ground or the ball. It’s a coin flip. If you watch golf on TV, every single player hitting any short game shot is gonna do two things. They’re gonna maintain the Y that they create with their forearms throughout that short swing, and they’re gonna move their chest with their arms, taking the club either straight up or away from their body. When you keep the club low and around your body, you get yourself very stuck. You have to keep your hands from going down too quickly, and then just at the right moment, shoot them down towards the ball, all while keeping the club behind your hands, holding off what should be a natural release, you can make it much easier on yourself. If you wanna chip it more like a pro, make your short game easier to manage, the two things that I think are most important to focus on are maintaining that Y, letting your chest be what controls your backswing, turning your swing back with your chest instead of your arms will make that stroke much easier to repeat, and it shouldn’t look like this, right? It should look a lot more like this. You wanna take it steep on the way back, make sure that we’re getting the ball first,
steep on the way down, making a downward blow onto the golf ball, getting the much more appropriate launch and spin for that shot. Watch the best in the world pitch and chip. I promise you, they are keeping their hands in front of them, taking the club very steep on their pitches and chip shots, and they’re doing it with their chest. Do the same if you want to make things easier on yourself around the green. Be sure to like and subscribe for the next tip next Chewsday. We’ll see you on the course!
